Seventh Son (Trailer #1) Review

Sorry I planned to write a review of this earlier but better late than never. I first heard about this film in an issue of Empire Magazine earlier in the year and the idea intrigued me, but the teaser image sold me on it, so I waited to see if it would actually come out but like so many before it it’d  been moved to next year. Still I got this trailer to hold me over until January and well it’s not what I expected. Whilst I may love my fantasy films and my big budget explosions I was kind of hoping this one might be a little subtler, but it’s got some fascinating creatures and features so am not complaining. Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore are…interesting choices but I am not sure I’d pick them for the roles, certainly hope they prove me wrong. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer.

My Score: B-

Release date: 17th January 2014

Plot:

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. John Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a Spook, a person who fights against the Dark, who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: John Gregory.

In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. Now he has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

Top 6 Scenes

6. Pointless Knife Throw

Seventh-Son-knife-throwing

Oh look at me I can throw a knife! Nobody cares. Well actually it looks pretty cool but it’s still pointless and out of place in a trailer. On a separate note, what’s wrong with his accent? A fantasy film with American accents sounds really weird. I’ll probably get used to it.

5. So That’s a Monster

Seventh-Son-monster

Is it just me or does that monster look weirdly real? I can’t put my finger on it but it looks ferocious enough for me. I really hope the monsters in this film take a little longer to defeat than the ones in Clash of the Titans, boss fight took seconds!

4. Julianne Moore On a Bad Day

Seventh-Son-Juliene-Moore

I don’t know but am pretty sure this is the dragon form of Julianne Moore’s character. Creepy ass monsters, it’s all in the face, the scary ass face!

3. Four Arm Sword Fights

Seventh-Son-four-armed-swordman

Now you know this scene will be either brilliant and fun or so bad that you will laugh yourself to sleep when you think about it, either way it’ll be worth watching.

2. The Cure For Cowardice

Seventh-Son-drinking

Easily the funniest part of this trailer and the type of character Jeff Bridges loves to play, as evidenced by RIPD coming out soon where the character seems almost identical. But as long as he makes me laugh I don’t care.

1. Pure Bad Ass!

Jeff Bridges vs a Fan, I mean vs CGI, sorry I mean vs a dragon monster. Haha it fools no one but I don’t expect much from this film but a little fun.

I hope the four arm fight is good. that was the only exciting part to me in this trailer. Jeff Bridges likes fun characters and it looks like he had fun with this one. Didn’t it get delayed? I thought it was supposed to launch a lot earlier. Hmm.

anyways, I think the trailer will end up being more impressive than the film itself. Great trailer review, man.

Yeah I think it was originally going to come out this year about October, but got moved because of too much competition.

Sadly I think your right, fun trailer terrible film is my prediction 😀

I’ll probably watch this just because I’m a desperate fantasy fan, but I really wish they would stop making them all flashy, seemingly brainless action romps.

I like Ben Barnes but this movie doesn’t exactly entice me. Jeff Bridges seems to be playing the same gruff, bearded old man again, same like in this weekend’s RIPD.

This trailer gave me vibes of a medieval RIPD. Not looking too good, IMO.

I like Jeff Bridges, but this gruff veteran he keeps playing is going to get old soon. This movie looks pretty interesting though.
