The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Trailer #1) Review

Haven’t done one of these for a while, but this is a pretty big one. Whilst I had my problems with the first film I certainly saw potential, just needed to fix the dialogue and pacing, also better special effects which being a sequel to a very profitable first film I am sure this will have. Before you start saying this isn’t the first trailer, it is because the first was just a long teaser. If this trailer is a true representation of the film then I like where it is going, apparently there is a new director who is responsible for this. I did ask a fan of the book series to tell me what she thought and she said this film looked more like the book from this trailer, so hopefully you fans have something to look forward to this winter. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer.

My Score: A

Release date: 22nd November 2013

Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

Top 8 Scenes

8. What a Warm Smile

I do like a good presenter in the despot future, like the Running Man. I hope this guy gets more funny dialogue rather than the more serious conversations with the contestants as in the first film. He’s got the look down he just needs more eccentricity.

7. Let’s Go Beat Some Hippies

Even though they are all dressed in super white security costumes there is still a possibility that they will be harsh and cruel as the oppressive force in Panem. I think a different colour would prove more intimidating but as a later still shows the government in this film seem to be far crueller which I like. I hope they beat some innocents and really make us hate them; otherwise it just doesn’t really work.

6. That’s Futuristic Training

All I remember from the first film was that boring kid throwing around a big ball (WHAT?). This looks way better, kind of want to try it myself; they’d probably become solid and kill me knowing my luck. Also the combatants this year are all winners from previous games and so we should see some real fights unlike the first film were most of it was off screen or terrible CGI’d creatures.

5. Kiss The Girl and Get The Whip

Now that is a fascist government in a dystopian future! Getting glorious flash backs of Starship Troopers. Got to admit this is pretty brave for what is essentially a tween film which means it gets my respect. The first film kind of glossed over some the more realistic events with off screen deaths and next to no blood.

4. I want that TV

What a great futuristic look, got the high tech TV with the guy in charge nice and comfortable in his home as he watches a rebellion rise. The films got a lot of politic weight to it this time around with many real world countries showing heated protests, maybe not over the same issues but they feel somebody is controlling them or their way of life is unfair. Deep.

3. ROME! I mean the Capitol

It looks magnificent and I must say a lot like Rome, especially if you look at the celebration scenes in Gladiator. I am really liking this shot, we get drummers, lots of flags, huge crowds and it’s a shame its not digital IMAX.

I hope they don’t show any of the fights in the trailers, I think if they can hold out until the films shown that’d be great. They don’t need to show it because they know people will be going out to see it regardless so just keep it spoiler free people. Does look good though and I hope she can swim.

1. Jump Dammit!

She looks genuinely scared in this shot, something I never really got much of in the first film. Also you may notice that this and the last shot were in IMAX size so it maybe that the games will be entirely shot in IMAX which will be nice. As I was saying about the emotions in the first film, weak and really weak. I know she’s a great actress so I am blaming the director and script.

New Poster

Well that’s my views. Now what do you think about this newest trailer?

Looking forward to this. Love the books. Well, the first two…

  2. boxofficebuzzab says :

The first Hunger Games novel is actually my favorite of the books, but I think Catching Fire the movie may actually turn out to be a better film than the first.

  3. ReasonableCritic says :

Also, if anyone is interested (who knows, someone might have some time to kill), here is a link to my review of the first Hunger Games:

  4. ReasonableCritic says :

    Awesome breakdown, Tim.
I haven’t read the books, but the first Hunger Games was top-notch SF. If it weren’t for a few modern-looking effects shots, it could have been made in the 1970’s.
Class warfare, modern civilization in moral decline. We are Ancient Rome. Brilliant stuff.

  5. sidekickreviews says :

Based on this trailer, this is going to follow closely to book 2 which is a great thing. Good that we’ll get to see more of PanEm. The special effects and scope of the movie is going to be bigger and better.

  6. The Focused Filmographer says :

Great look at this trailer, Tim. I am also looking forward to it. You bring out some solid points I hadn’t really considered about the first one and hope that they do address them with this sequel. I think so.

Glad you did the screenshot of the “Rome” scene. I felt that was amazing myself.

The white uniforms of the police remind me of the stormtroopers in Star Wars.

Gearing up for the games. That Katniss is one unlucky girl being chosen again like that, huh? ha

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Thanks, new director, bigger budget, so yeah I assume it will fix the odd problem 😀

The Rome look is great, clearly see the detail applied to the CGI.
Haha let the fighting begin! And if I don’t see some damn death in the start i’ll be pissed!

  7. ruth says :

    Looking forward to this one!

  8. Tom says :

I’m with Isaac on this. Hunger Games was actually pretty good to me. I probably will stick with just watching the films, tho and not go into reading them as well. at some point i know i’d be disappointed if i did that haha

  9. Emma says :

Looks good. I enjoyed the first one. The reaping scene made me think of Nazi concentration camps and gave me chills.

  10. Popcorn and a Pepsi says :

Wow! Wicked breakdown, I can see what you mean about Rome and Gladiator now! Only thing is that the no. 1 point is there is a reason she’s crying but you’ll find that out, it’s in the book. But otherwise it’s great!

  11. Zoë says :

The first one really wasn’t that bad, and was quite accurate in terms of what the book presented. This one I want to see, but it looks like they are moving a bit far from the source material… 😦 Guess we will have to wait and see where it goes.

    • Tim The Film Guy says :

Really? What looks different? I ask because my source on these books seems adamant that this looks pretty accurate 😀

Haha I don’t have a clue so blissful ignorance xD

      • Zoë says :

I will watch the trailer later (can’t access it here) so that I can be more accurate, but the uprisings, etc. My friend and I watched it and were like erm… and Finnick is SO BADLY CAST it is shocking.

True, sometimes it is pure bliss to not know hey!

        • Tim The Film Guy says :

          I await your reply 😀

          • Zoë says :

Oki, this is most certainly not the same trailer that I watched the first time around, so I will need to retract my first statement, this one is a lot more accurate. I should find out what the other one was, a teaser or a fan built one or what. Still, Katniss and Peeta did not witness the execution like that, Snow threatened her, that goodness we see that. It seems accurate what her and Peeta and Gale are all going through. I still maintain that Finnick was dreadfully cast (definitely what I think of when I think sex symbol to be dead honest). I think the Peacekeeper uniforms work, this is a future where everything is in darkness, dirt and ruin. That white purity would stand out, but would not mean something so innocuous, but strike fear. All in all I am looking forward to the Quarter Quell, I would love to see how they pull it all together.

          • Tim The Film Guy says :

Ah so my friend knows her stuff, good to know 😀

Glad you liked the new trailer, never trust a teaser!

I haven’t read the book so I have to ask who Finnick is.

          • Zoë says :

😛 That she does yeah! I hope they keep it close to the source material, it would be great then!

            Pfffff, teasers!

Finnick is the best character they introduced. He… erm… is in the trailer. The incredibly unattractive blonde? No spoilers, so I won’t divulge too much.

Good to see you are looking forward to it. Close now I must say!

          • Tim The Film Guy says :

Is he the one throwing the knifes in the training room?

          • Zoë says :

He is the first tribute you see when Katniss and Peeta walk into the training arena. He is eating something.

          • Tim The Film Guy says :

Ah just watched it, you mean Mr no shirt 😀

          • Zoë says :

Haha yeah. Hope he plays the role well, though he is nothing like pictured.

          • Zoë says :

Don’t think it is rue actual training room but as they go through the doors he is the next thing the trailer shows.

  12. Chris says :

Looks like the exact same movie as the first one based on that trailer. The teaser was FAR more effective at selling this film, IMO.

  13. Kim @ Tranquil Dreams says :

Can’t wait! Love the trailer and loved the 2nd book! 🙂 I have a feeling its going to be pretty awesome 🙂

  14. le0pard13 says :

Looking forward to the sequel. Nice breakdown, Tim.

  15. Brian @ Hard Ticket to Home Video says :

Jennifer Lawrence not competing in a white tank top = not interested.

  16. theipc says :

I actually liked the first one and kind of look forward to the sequel…
