X-Men: Days Of Future Past (Trailer #1) Review

Before I start reviewing the trailer I want to say that I know the story arc and how mad it gets, and I was pretty sure Bryan Singer couldn’t handle it. Looking at the trailer I now know he cannot handle it, but he can strip it of most of its parts and drop a steaming pile on a brilliant adaptation opportunity. At this point I wouldn’t even watch this film, hope they show a better trailer or make a better movie. There are some good points to the trailer and I will give my views on both sides of the coin but I have a great deal of disappointment with the way the film looks so far. I really hope come next year that I will eat my own words but it would have to be a different film then advertised. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer, more so if you disagree.

My Score: C-

Release date: 23rd May 2014

Plot:

The X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The characters from the original X-Men film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from X-Men: First Class in a battle that must change the past – to save their future.

What I liked

#4. Old Man Wolverine

X-Men-Days-of-future-past-Hugh-Jackman

Well at least he adapted the white streaks properly. Haha my nit-picking can go both ways. Wolverine is clearly taking a bigger part in this story than in the original run but that isn’t surprising, however it does rub me up the wrong way in some respects. I am glad that they changed it from Kitty Pryde going back because I don’t like Bryan’s interpretation of her, and so Wolverine will do since we are going back to the 60/70’s to fit with the First Class timeline.

#3. Nixon – Hater of The Mutants

X-Men-Days-of-future-past-Nixon

Ha gotta love some villainous Nixon in office. I mean if you need a president to look like the bad guy he’s an easy pick. I really want him to sound like the Nixon from Futurama, it would so funny! “Send out those Sentinels and slay those filthy mutants” in the voice below.

#2. New Beast Looks Pretty Good

X-Men-Days-of-future-past-Beast

I wasn’t a big fan of the look Beast had in the First Class film but I think this one’s looks pretty kick ass. Might even say he looks a little scary. Won’t help with Human-mutant relations but can scare some baddies.

#1. The Meeting of New & Old

X-Men-Days-of-future-past-James-McAvoy-&-Patrick-Stewart

This is what we all really want from a film of this kind, meeting of old and new. Both Xavier and Magneto where cast brilliantly with old and young actors so if time travel was involved in a plot at all they both have to meet. Clearly they will not meet but the idea is still being teased. Most likely this scene is a memory planted in Logan’s mind to show to Xavier’s younger self to convince him to help.

What I Didn’t Like

#4. The Future Looks Incredible Fake

X-Men-Days-of-future-past-the future

I don’t get the future in this, it’s so cheesy set looking. The only way I can really describe it is having a Mortal Kombat movie feel to it. I clearly know it’s a set with a green screen but where the hell is that supposed to be? The Himalayas? Apparently high altitudes help mutants fight Sentinels.

#3. Don’t Trust That Music

“John Murphy – The Surface Of The Sun” is used in this trailer, not a problem with that many films have used this brilliant score from the film Sunshine. However it does distract the viewer from actually analysing the trailer (got me). I am sure this will fit with the theme of the film but the trailer isn’t actually put together very well, even if you ignored the stuff I didn’t like it’s a pretty rough cut out of a film coming out in a few months.

#2. Young Xavier Having a Little Cry

X-Men-Days-of-future-past-James-McAvoy

If more than 10 minutes of this film is dedicated to Xavier being a little bitch I will leave the cinema. I get that after First Class he had lost the use of his legs and had lost a good friend and in doing so gained a new enemy, but that film ended with him starting a new life in which he would start the school for Mutants, he had a goal and a reason to carry on. I really don’t see the need in a film with so much going on to then back pedal on characters that need no interfering with.

#1. The Future Has No Grit

X-Men-Days-of-future-past-future-X-Men

In the comic the future was a dark and desperate place with endless fighting and running in cites from these giant robots, which will either kill you or send you to a work camp. Very much like the future in the Terminator film but with mutants. In this though there so clean! There isn’t a spec of dirt or a scratch on their face. The feeling just isn’t right at all they don’t look like they are fighting for survival. This is one of the bigger disappointments of the trailer.

Well that’s my views. Now what do you think about this newest trailer?

All of the X Men movies are painfully average. I have so many problems with them I don’t know where to start. Cyclops never had a big role in the movies and he’s the freaking leader of the X Men. Where’s Gambit, Jubilee, Rogue [i’m talking about the country gal, ass kicking Rogue not that annoying brat we were stuck with, Basically what we got was a Wolverine Trilogy.

Bryan Singer is not a good director and the x-men movies are a disappointment. This trailer looked like more of the same. I’ll probably go see it only so I can write a review on it letting others know how terrible it really is.

Man, to me this plot just seems like its going to be so dog-gone convoluted I don’t even want to get involved in it. Not being the biggest X-Men fan to begin with might make this easier for me! lol. Nice write-up Tim.

Where are the sentinels in this trailer? This trailer doesn’t excite me. I haven’t read the comic story line so I don’t know what made it special. It makes sense that Wolverine is the one going back instead of Kitty, he’s the most popular character that fans care about. Yeah, Xavier past and present won’t physically meet, but their minds will. Nothing about this trailer screams, “I have to watch it” but I’m going to watch it anyways.

Well they look crap and will be in the film for a microsecond. so that’s why 😀

The comic arc is great, I have no doubt this will not and I will be watching the film to give a terrible review. Look forward to swearing my friend 😀

I do HOPE this movie is good… I really do. I’d be thrilled if it is 🙂 Unfortunately, in the past, Bryan Singer has fallen short time and time again with his films and the first class film was no different so to expect a sequel to suddenly be fantastic is setting yourself up for major disappointment in my opinion. I, basically, completely agree with what you said. And with regards to Hypersonic’s comment I don’t think you’re a “hard person to please” I say you’re just smart with good taste! 😉

“smart with good taste!” That’s my new tag line 😀

Painfully average director in my experience. I just want the whole series to be rebooted, just press rewind!

Thanks for the comment, got any favourite parts?

Oh, but I do have one complaint: I can’t stand Ellen Page! Why is she in my movies??? Get her out of there!

I have to disagree with your first impressions as well. I for one am incredibly happy that Bryan Singer is back as director. It was incredibly clear to me that a large reason behind the massive drop in quality from X2 to X3 was the change in director leadership from Singer to Brett Ratner, so I’m glad to have the Singerman back. My guess is it probably won’t live up to your high expectations if youre a really passionate follower of the original comic story, but I think it will live up to most people’s hopes and perhaps make people take the X-Men series seriously again.

Damn, you didn’t like this trailer? Whether the finished product turns out well remains to be seen, but as for this trailer at least, I thought it was absolutely epic, one of the better trailers I’ve seen lately, and really leaves me hyped up for the next movie.

At first I did like this trailer, but after repeat viewing (takes a lot for these reviews) I found it very irritating. Maybe I am being too picky but I just don’t think this film will be good and the trailer nearly convinced me 😦

Glad you liked it though and I hope I am wrong 😀

Haha you seem like a hard person to please (and I mean no disrespect by that), however I can definitely see where you’re coming from on the stuff you liked and the stuff you didn’t and the whole adaptation of the comic storyline taking a pretty big shift from the original source material.

At this point I am pretty interested in seeing where this film goes. Most comic book films I just look at from a film perspective rather constantly looking back at how accurate it is to the comics unless it REALLY requires it. The X-Men film series since the first film has done a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong and for better or worse it continues to move ahead and at least in the last 2 years the films have been improving.

Day of Future Past looks like it could be good, maybe even awesome, however there are many things that trouble me. 1) How much of the focus will be on Wolverine? 2) Will everyone in the film get enough screen time? 3) How much of the film will be a sequel to First Class and how much will be a sequel to X3? 4) Will Bryan Singer ever helm a film that doesn’t suck?

So many questions, so little time to answer them all. Well let’s hope for a fancier trailer in months to come.

P.S. Sorry for the long-ass comment. XD

Haha long! I know most people will disagree with me and I get that I do. However I hate average films. Hate them a lot more than bad films at least they can be laughed at. I find the films Singer directs are so average it blinds me in rage.

There are so many things that will piss me off about this film but chances are I will be watching it. I just want to be wrong!

Good questions and I agree I do worry to those as well. But a new thought occurred to me, the best thing about the X-Men films Singer made if there is anything is the humour, but he said the film will have a Darker Tone. Sad and weak that’s what I fear 😦
