You’re Next (2013) Review

You’re Next proves that starting strong means nothing, it’s entirely how you end and boy does this end strong. This film is probably my favourite horror film of 2013 and I only saw it right near the end which sad but really fun. The film has a lot of energy and when it gets going it doesn’t stop until the end, lots of interesting kills, good thrilling music and the camera work did manage to get at time with a jump here and there. Also if you are a fan of strong female leads then you will love this film because Erin played by Shami Vinson kicks all kind of ass. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

“I stuck a blender in his head and killed him.” Freakin love that line.

One of the smartest and most terrifying films in years, YOU’RE NEXT reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped…until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all.

The story is incredible simple at the start, just a normal home invasion, see 5 of them a year and the cast was okay, but as the story progresses you get the feeling that something doesn’t make sense and you know something is happening behind this basic framework of a horror film. Spoiler! Turns out what was behind this basic story is a girl with survivalist training vs a group of ex-military type hired to kill the father for inheritance, but it wasn’t the bad brother behind it all it was Erin’s pacifist boyfriend! LOVED the end to this film, the phone, the one liners, just the whole idea. Yeah I basically said how it ends but I don’t care and look forward to some discusses on this film.

The cast and characters are okay but the way it plays out really makes me laugh, the drama around this horrible family feels like a weird indie comedy and you forget that it’s a horror, haha until the hippy boyfriend gets crossbow bolt threw his head, then you’re like “well I definitely put the right film on”. Another thing about the cast is that everybody isn’t the way they start, the dick brother was probably the nicest of the siblings, not that he has much competition but you don’t expect that at the beginning. Erin starts off as a sweet heart and ends with her covered in blood and cuts and starts getting creative with her kills, not sure I’d use a blender to kill a person. Haha who am I kidding I am just waiting for the opportunity #BringOnTheZombieApocalpyse.

The best reviews I found would be these:

“No, I didn’t get “scared” so much, but I had a LOT of fun – that’s what I like about this. It was fun. It was bloody. It was funny.  And the Erin character was just awesome. This is my type of movie all the way and I can’t wait to see it again.” Isaacs Picture Conclusions. Full Review

“While You’re Next has a capable lead character, it doesn’t have an iconic killer to carry the film. You’re Next won’t reignite the popularity of slashers or home invasion movies because it’s a pale imitation of fan favourite classics. But for those who have a strong affinity for this film genre, it’s still worth checking out.” Sidekick Reviews. Full Review

“Sharni Vinson is the shining star here. Her performance supersedes all others and should be enough to launch her into the mainstream. Bloody, violent, and decidedly funny, “You’re Next” is further proof that the genre isn’t dying.” The Cinema Monster. Full Review

So happy I got this picture!

My favourite scene would have to be Erin killing her boyfriend, the whole scene is really well done and because he just keeps talking and trying to explain his ridiculous excuse as to what he did, Erin just killing him was extremely satisfying.

I watched this last night and it really took me by surprise. It’s probably the first horror movie since ‘The Descent’ that really had an effect on me. The only problem for me was that the parents clearly weren’t old enough to have kids that age…but I’m just being pedantic. The scene where she uses the hammer on one of the intruders was brilliant.

  3. Lights Camera Reaction says :

Nice review! I found You’re Next to be, sadly, disappointing. Vinson is a refreshing and likeable heroine, but she isn’t given enough to do apart from embracing her inner Rambo, it’s fun to watch for a while but gets tiresome towards the end.

Agree 100% with your opening line. It’s all about the blender

Great read Tim. I had a bunch of fun with this. Love the B-movie feel to it. Wasn’t particularly scary but still a really fun little film.

I saw this in a cinema and it was one of my favourites of 2013. The black comedy and twisted relationships are the best aspect of it.

Yeah, the mouthy, dick brother was the nicest sibling. At least he was non-homicidal. Did I just say mouthy dick? I liked the awkward dinner scene between the brothers before things got crazy. You liked this one a lot more than me but that’s cool! Thanks for the link and remind me to keep you away from blenders! 🙂

Nice review, Tim! I liked this film so much more than I expected to. Erin is quite possibly the most badass heroine of last year. 🙂

Thanks. Glad you liked it. The heroine of tgis film kicks ass and I like that she was like this before the house rarher than becoming stronger, seen that before. But she’s always been bad ass 😀

This is definitely not for me Tim 🙂

  14. CMrok93 says :

Good review Tim. It’s not an original film, but the fact that it has so much fun with its twists, turns and idea of any character being knocked-off at any second, does real wonders for it. Especially since we haven’t seen a home-invasion thriller done this well in quite some time.

  15. Three Rows Back says :

What a great read! Thanks for that Tim 🙂
