You’re Next (2013) Review

You’re Next proves that starting strong means nothing, it’s entirely how you end and boy does this end strong. This film is probably my favourite horror film of 2013 and I only saw it right near the end which sad but really fun. The film has a lot of energy and when it gets going it doesn’t stop until the end, lots of interesting kills, good thrilling music and the camera work did manage to get at time with a jump here and there. Also if you are a fan of strong female leads then you will love this film because Erin played by Shami Vinson kicks all kind of ass. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

Plot:

One of the smartest and most terrifying films in years, YOU’RE NEXT reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped…until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all.

The story is incredible simple at the start, just a normal home invasion, see 5 of them a year and the cast was okay, but as the story progresses you get the feeling that something doesn’t make sense and you know something is happening behind this basic framework of a horror film. Spoiler! Turns out what was behind this basic story is a girl with survivalist training vs a group of ex-military type hired to kill the father for inheritance, but it wasn’t the bad brother behind it all it was Erin’s pacifist boyfriend! LOVED the end to this film, the phone, the one liners, just the whole idea. Yeah I basically said how it ends but I don’t care and look forward to some discusses on this film.

The cast and characters are okay but the way it plays out really makes me laugh, the drama around this horrible family feels like a weird indie comedy and you forget that it’s a horror, haha until the hippy boyfriend gets crossbow bolt threw his head, then you’re like “well I definitely put the right film on”. Another thing about the cast is that everybody isn’t the way they start, the dick brother was probably the nicest of the siblings, not that he has much competition but you don’t expect that at the beginning. Erin starts off as a sweet heart and ends with her covered in blood and cuts and starts getting creative with her kills, not sure I’d use a blender to kill a person. Haha who am I kidding I am just waiting for the opportunity #BringOnTheZombieApocalpyse.

My favourite scene would have to be Erin killing her boyfriend, the whole scene is really well done and because he just keeps talking and trying to explain his ridiculous excuse as to what he did, Erin just killing him was extremely satisfying.
