The LEGO Movie (2014) Review
This has taken far too long to review but here we are. I really liked this film and when I first heard of it I didn’t care, love a pleasant surprise. Its action packed, funny, got a great voice cast, and the story is quite touching, very much to my surprise. The visuals in this are great, I really thought the mix of Stop-motion and CGI was very impressive; I was often unable to see the difference in the film. The characters are either really funny or are great character parodies. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.
“I know what you’re thinking, he’s the least qualified person to lead us…and you’re right!”
Plot:
“The LEGO (R) Movie” is the first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO (R) adventure. The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet (Chris Pratt) an ordinary, rules- following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

The story had to build (intended) an entire world that not only is fun but also justifies why it is a LEGO movie. It’s also very funny, the dialogue is so snappy and I laughed a lot for a kid’s film. That actually brings me to the voice cast which where stellar and oh so numerous, from Chris Pratt to Morgan Freeman. I don’t have time to talk about all the characters so I’ll focus on just a few. First off Liam Neeson as both good cop and bad cop was hilarious, and the scenes near the end where hard to watch (spoiler: His mum and dad + glue). Emmet brilliantly voiced by Chris Pratt was instantly charming and relatable as an unlikely hero, you cannot resist routing for him to succeed.
The action was pretty great, with the film essentially building every type of LEGO setting you can think of and having many insane Lego battles, which I will go into when I talk visuals which is now. The visual style is really impressive, I don’t just mean they look good I mean they look like Lego; everything looks like Lego, from the characters to the lasers and even the explosions! That’s dedication to a brand. The music and style is very smart and funny, it all just works in this film to create a fantastic movie experience.
Trailer:
The best reviews I found would be these:
“The Lego Movie didn’t seem ambitious to me when I first saw the trailer, as much as it did dumb and forgettable. Needless to say I was wrong, for this movie ended up being a big surprise, a ton of fun, and an ultimately satisfying movie that encourages viewers to remember one: use your imagination, and two: always replace ordinary with extraordinary.” Flicks With Maddog. Full Review.
“It may seem like I am biased towards this movie, and perhaps I am. But I was genuinely surprised at how great of a job they did with this film. Every peg was in place, every piece fit. Lego did not disappoint; it seems they never do.” Ian The Cool’s Reviews. Full Review.
“The movie was fun, it has the magic combination of kid and adult humor so that parents won’t want to tear their hair out before the end of the picture. The movie doesn’t set the world on fire or re-invent the wheel but it is a good escape for a bit and I am sure your kids will enjoy it. Just don’t ever go to Legoland. I hate that place.” Griff – 3 Guys 1 Movie. Full Review.
“I didn’t just like ‘The Lego Movie’, I freakin’ loved it. Equal parts adorable, funny and so darn clever, this is an animated film for all ages… definitely not just kids. There’s plenty for everyone.” Nerdy Girl Rambles. Full Review.
Spoiler!
My favourite scene would be the reveal at the end, led to a really touching father son moment which I am always a sucker for. Ferrell did a great job as the Dad and villain of the film.

This was one of those movies that could have been a disaster, but the humor saved it, making it one of the funniest movies of the year! Awesome movie and great review, Tim!

I haven’t seen this yet, but it looks like a lot of fun. I remember playing with Legos as a kid and will admit that yes, I still collect them (I’ll admit I’m a geek). 😉

I thought it was pretty good, for a 90 minute toy commercial. I thought it was massively over-rated though. It’s still got some ridiculously high score like 90% on Rotten Tomatoes…

Almost sounds negative. I’d suggest acting like the last none invaded human in Invasion of the body snatchers. Head down or they’ll get ya 😀

Great review man, honestly I had waited forever for you to see this film because I knew that you’d like it 😀
Pretty much everyone is on the same page about this film. It is pretty damn awesome and one of the most surprising animated films in recent times in my opinion. I don’t think a story, visual presentation and cast of characters long with their great voice actors have come together in such a perfect way like The Lego Movie has.

I have heard of some people comparing it to what Toy Story did. Kinda makes sense you know bringing toys to life and all that 😀

Nice review buddy. The Lego Movie was really damn excellent in my book. They could have really screwed this up by making it outrageously cheesy and geared more towards the little kiddies. It remained relatively mature and always entertaining. Good to see another fan.

Thanks Buddy. Good writing and directing, that’s what’s between a good Lego movie and a bad Lego movie. Fan power! (I just pictured a hover craft) 😀
