Most Anticipated Horror Films Of Summer 2014

This is my list of the most anticipated horror films released or to be released in the summer of 2014. This one may come a bit late because it is already June by now. However most on the list may be difficult to watch at first and so this list could still be used to advice you on what good horror films are coming out. I will warn you that I have come to hate haunted house films so don’t expect any on this list. Oh and horror films have very sporadic release dates so I will just be sticking to US release dates.

Update on the voting posts. I have finished the first two ‘The Good Points To Films I Hate’ and ‘A Comic Nerdy Opinion Post’ this is obviously done as well and the next two ‘A New Top Ten List’ and ‘Some Kind of Anime Post’ will be finished over the next two weeks.

#5:  Stage Fright – 9th May

Set at a pretentious musical theater camp, this sick thriller follows teen singer Camilla Swanson (Allie MacDonald) whose dreams of Broadway turn to nightmares when a serial killer begins slaying the camp’s would-be stars. Could it be the same maniac who murdered her mother years before?

I hate Glee but I love horror so mix the two and I want dark comedy, and lots of bloody kills. Kinda looks like a musical version of Scream. If that looks fun and you enjoyed the trailer then I’d suggest watching it too. Am hearing good reviews. Still haven’t seen it and not sure if I’ll be able to see it until VOD.

“Isn’t it wrong to sing and dance when someone just died?”

#4:  The Signal – 13th June

The story of an MIT student whose life is changed forever when tracking down a notorious hacker leads to his exposure to the signal. He’s told he’s chosen. He’s gained strange abilities. But what does it all mean?

Probably the least horror of my choices I’ll admit but that’s what you get from some of the trailer and what I have heard in buzz is that it is scary and unique. Am really looking forward to this Sci-Fi Horror. Hope you enjoy the trailer, I know I did.

“We’re not 100% certain what we are dealing with here”

#3:  Deliver Us From Evil – 2nd July

NY police officer Ralph Sarchie investigates a series of crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest, schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the possessions that are terrorizing their city.

Haven’t quite seen this before, well we have but it’s got some twists. A police officer getting involved with the supernatural, it’s kind of like any possession or haunted house film but looks like it’s everywhere in the city. At least I hope it is.

“As a cop I have seen some horrible things. But nothing that can’t be explained by human nature.”

“Then you haven’t seen true evil.”

#2:  The Purge: Anarchy – 18th July

A couple are driving home to their kids when their car runs out of gas just as the Purge commences. Meanwhile, Leo goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it. The five people meet up as they attempt to survive the night in Los Angeles.

This is almost exactly what I wanted. I wanted an expanded look into the world established in the first film. I wanted to look at all different people’s lives be affected by the purge. I wanted an anthology but this will do as well.

“Tonight allows a release. America a nation reborn.”

#1:  The Green Inferno – 5th September

A group of New York City students on a good will mission to help an Amazon tribe struggling to survive. But when their plane crashes in the jungles, they become the victims of the very people they set out to save.

No idea if there is some kind of weird message in this but am just going to watch some college kids get eaten. Am imagining a better video quality version of Cannibal Holocaust. Maybe am wrong but it looks excellent. Interesting trivia, the natives are real natives who have never been filmed before. Authentic.

“Why are they doing this?” Cause you look damn taste. YUM!

Sorry if I am leaving two comments . . . I couldn’t tell if my first one went through. Was just going to mention that the trailer for The Signal looked really interesting. I recognized the main guy in it, Brenton Thwaites, as the main guy in The Giver trailer too. Definitely looking forward to checking both out!

I think The Signal looks pretty interesting. And I recognized the main guy, Brenton Thwaites, from the trailer of The Giver. So it looks like he’s going to be starring in a couple different films this year. Definitely looking forward to checking both out!

Great list. I’m glad to see a sequel to The Purge because I thought the first needed to expand just beyond the one house. This one should amp it up a lot.

I hate musicals so a serial killer offing the cast of one looks like fun.

I’m not usually into horror movies but a couple of these look pretty interesting. I’ve heard some good things about The Signal and The Green Inferno seems pretty unusual. Great post Tim!

Hmmm, The Signal looks like something I wanna support, not so much horror but an original sci-fi film, and I like the idea of a horror/musical mashup in Stage Fright. Sadly both those have already long passed out of theatres without me having ever heard of them 😦

I can’t stand “possession” films like The Conjuring or what Deliver Us from Evil looks to be. The Exorcist is the scariest film I’ve ever seen but sadly no other film has been able to recreate anything close to that sort of dread, fear, creepiness, or dare I say it, HORROR in any of the countless demonic possession films made since. I already know the layout to DUE: things will go bump, we’ll hear scary noises, and eventually someone will see something weird (intended to be scary) for a split second. This will repeat ad infinitum until one of the possessed finally goes ape-shit at the end and tries to kill everybody.

The Purge movies never won me over because the premise seems so incredibly ludicrous. I guess maybe I’m just prejudiced but most people who’ve seen either claim the setup is just stupid or that’s a potentially interesting idea that gets wasted by poor writing and bad direction. I like the fact that they’re at least trying to work in a social allegory, but I wonder if the determination for thrills, chills, and numbing violence overwhelms it.

The only horror film on this list that I like that I still might be able to see is Eli Roth’s Green Inferno. I’ve never seen Cannibal Holocaust, but honestly I’d rather see a more modern update of the grindhouse concept. Plus, it looks like Roth’s trying to poke fun at environmental/social activists, which I always support satirizing 😀

Haha sorry but The Exorcist just makes me laugh every time haha xD

Green Inferno looks pretty good, hope I feel the same afterwards 😀

Any you think I have missed?

Great post, Ace! I don’t know for sure what’s coming out over here but I do know I want to see Green Inferno. That Stage Fright movie is out here on VOD and I’m not sure about it….

Thanks Man. Yeah some are really small films others are bigger. International release dates are all over the place.

I love horror films when they are isolated from any help and Green Inferno definitely fills that category.

Have you see Stage Fright or do you just no know about it based on the trailer?

I’ve watched the trailer a couple of times and neither time grabbed me by the balls to rent it for a special “see it before it’s in theaters” price…
