Have You Ever Liked a Film in a Genre You Normally Hate?

Another random question that popped into my mind recently as I watched a film I’ll being reviewing this week. Now I find that if a friend or family member makes me watch something because they believe it to be excellent that I will give it a go eventually, against my natural pessimistic view of genres I normally avoid (If you don’t remember genres I don’t like click here). If I do like it more likely than not it is a film so excellent that it transcends all genres. A rarity but I absolutely love it when I find one. So I ask the question Have You Ever Liked a Film in a Genre You Normally Hate? Mine is after the break.

Damn it Stop Making Me Cry

The movie I was watching recently that brought on the question was an Anime film called Wolf Children. I had been recommended to watch from quite a few places, a few of you reviewed it and I’ve had friends say it’s really excellent. But it’s a little on the sappy side based on the simple description given, also if you look at the cover you’ll see why I hesitated (Yes. I literally judged it by its cover!). Anyway turned out to be an amazingly beautiful film, look out for my review.

Anyway other films I have felt the same way about would be Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, Cool Runnings, The Pianist, Schindler’s List. Hell I’ve regretted my hesitation so many times its ridiculous. I’ll still hesitate in the future though. Right now it’s your turn! Give me some answers. I expect to hear some Rom-Com’s that you actually give a thumps up to instead of a middle finger.

I suppose I’m pretty much open to most genres but I’m no fan of the Western. So to say The Quick and the Dead and even, to a certain extent, Back To The Future, are favourites of mine says a lot.

I’ve never been to big on the musical genre, but I think Once is fantastic.

Well I don’t like torture-porn horror movies (I don’t know if that counts as an offical genre) but I quite liked the first Saw movie. Unfortunatley it went downhill with the sequels.

Just watched one last night and a surprisingly good one – The Other Woman. I can’t say I hate chick-flicks, but they aren’t on my list of movie genres to watch.

I usually steer clear or dramas. Ironically though, some of my favorite movies are spawned from that category 😀

Haha, this is a fun idea for a post! I actually usually find myself on the complete opposite end of this idea – I go into movies expecting to enjoy them, and end up totally disliking them!

But movies that would work well for this question are actually some of my favorite movies to date now: The Artist (I was hesitant to watch a B&W silent film and I ended up LOVING it!) and (500) Days of Summer (I’m pretty specific on which rom coms I consider good, and that one has become one of my favorite movies ever!).

I have discovered that if you go in with low expectations, you usually end up enjoying films more.

I’m going to go with “the fault in our stars.” I don’t usually like teen romance dramas, but I thought this was a really good, bittersweet movie. And yes, I’ll admit I cried. 😉

I hate Horror. But one movie I liked, which I watched purely to see what Danielle Radcliffe was upto after Hp, was THE WOMAN IN BLACK.

Since my Review, it’s been pointed out that it’s not a pure ‘horror’ genre, but whatevs. I liked it for its simplicity.

Oh yeah that’s a good film. I wouldn’t personally call it a horror, more a thriller but for the purposes of this post we’ll say it is 😀

I imagine the reason people say that it isn’t is the same reason I say it isn’t, PG13 is no horror of mine 😀

I’m not big on musicals and yet I love the film “Tommy” There’s something about actors singing badly (for the most part) that appeals to me..

Well, while we’re on the subject of Japanese animation, lemme just say that I fucking hate Anime (the drawing style, the tiny noses, the big eyes, the stupid hair, the cheesy expressions, etc), but I had a lot of fun with the Cowboy Beebop (2001) movie 😀

Also, I’m normally not a fan of romantic dramas since they tend to be geared to empty-headed female viewers (the female equivalent of the Michael Bay Transformers fan, I’d say), but I do love the romance films of Casablanca, Silver Linings Playbook, and Her 😀

Oh good lord no! That hurt me so bad as I read it. I’ve never heard anyone say they hate it. How do you hate anime?

Okay well at least you liked Cowboy Bebop. Maybe you’d like the more adult themed ones then.

Silver Linings Playbook, and Her are excellent choices for rom coms that are so outside the normal crap. Thanks for commenting 😀

My review for The Wolf Children was full of nothing but praise. I loved it as well!

As for film’s I liked that are from a genre I hate? I hate musicals a lot but when Takashi Miike directs one like For Love’s Sake and The Happiness of the Katakuri’s, I just wanna sing and dance and have a good time! They are a lot of fun and full of black humour! I highly recommend them!

Okay so the Strangers changed your mind on the whole genre. Anything you have watched recently in the horror genre you liked?

      • lukebbtt says :

Not recently. Again, there are so many bad ones out there. I guess You’re Next would be the last horror movie I like, but I liked it for the elements that weren’t horror-based (could say the same with Cabin in the Woods).

Oh yeah I liked You’re Next, gone off house invasions before then. Cabin in the Woods was great as well, when I first saw it in cinemas I couldn’t believe how it turned out, that marketing campaign was brilliant at hiding the truth 😀

Found Footage = “Cloverfield”; Drama = “Big Fish” & “The Notebook” (worth seeing for James Garner’s performance); Rom-Com = “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” & “The Proposal”; Family = “The Incredibles” & “The Chronicles of Narnia 2005” (all sequels reminded me why I avoid the genre).

I’ve never that crazy for the ‘Found Footage’ genre. ‘Blair Witch’ I found maddening (and made me nauseated with its shaky-cam). Still, I have to admit I was enthralled with REC.

Yes. For me it was the film About Time, which I write about on my blog as being advertised as a rom-com but was actually a touching story about a father and his son. Good question.

Oh yeah I still need to see that but I have heard good things. Glad you liked it. Got any others? I feel like I am going to get sick of Rom Com answers and this is only the second comment 😀

Sure. I am a big fan of Lost in Translation, so when I saw trailers for Broken Flowers, I thought it was just going to be more of the same, taking advantage of Murray’s resurgence, but it is truly a great film and I was hooked from the start.
Also, I was never a fan of the Zombie genre (aside from the original Night of the Living Dead), so I was hesitant to watch 28 Days, but wow that is a great movie. It actually got me to watch others like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, etc.

Haha I can see that. Some rom coms aren’t bad. There are some great family indie ones that are really touching stories. I do need an example though Tyson, so you know your embarrassment is complete 😀
