Movie News Report: Aquaman’s new look and Spider-Man Returns Home

I am trying something new. This one will be a rough draft, need criticism. Do tell me if it is crap or makes no sense.

This will be an end of the week wrap up of what has happened in the geeky world of movies. Decided to do this about an hour before I wrote it so am just going off memory. Fill in the gaps in the comments, I know I missed something.

Also I’ll include some movie features I liked from the blogosphere. I follow a lot of nerds!

Spider-Man Joining Marvel Cinematic Universe

Well that’s interesting. Heard rumours and there were some studio notes leaked during the Sony Hack but no one really thought this was going to happen. Bummer about Garfield not making it in but I get they need a fresh start (again). Am sure marvel will work it in fine but it’s a little tricky and could be their undoing if they rush it.

Alien is Coming Back with Blomkamp

Good news keeps coming! We’re getting another alien film, YAY! I think yay anyway. Just hope Blomkamp can let go of his not so subtle equality messages. Not sure how you’d fit his normal message into an Alien film.

We Officially See Jason Momoa as Aquaman

Looks fantastic! Making fun of this guy is going to be tricky. Not that the meme’s haven’t been excellent. The image used above is a slightly altered image to show colour. Snyder has been releasing all images showing very little colour, although all the costumes definitely have colour.

    I was watching Man of Steel last night and there were moments were I kept getting images of Mamoa’s Aquaman and thinking how potentially exciting the whole DC movie universe is going to be…

    Definitely a bummer about Garfield not returning for any more Spider-Man, on the one had it’s ace that cinematic Spidey will now benefit from some Marvel wisdom but on the other I’m a little frustrated that they’re rebooting the character again and back to high school…again arg!

    I like the new feature mate. It works well. One possible suggestion, which you may not love. You could perhaps put a link in the title of each piece of news to a site like Slashfilm or a blog where someone has gone into more detail about that story. That way this would function as a roundup, and folk can easily get more info if they want.

        I definitely didn’t notice any glaring omissions. I miss a lot of movie news, just depending on how much I have been on twitter, so we both may have missed something I guess. But if you do make this a regular column, it will be good for people like me who don’t regularly check news sites.

    Aquaman might just work – looks better than I thought he would. Spidey news is great, but I wish Garfield would have come back. Really enjoyed his version of the web slinger.

    I’m extremely impressed by the look of Aquaman. I’m hoping Batman v Superman will tip the balance, and I’ll like more Snyder movies than I dislike. The man has something interesting going on (if you haven’t seen the CGI movie he made about the warrior owls, I would highly recommend it). Aquaman will only have a tiny part in BvS, but any good news brings hope, and this image is very good news. And then, across the universe, Spider-Man is coming home. They won’t rush it. It’s going to be awesome. Mark my words.

    Socio-political messages give sci-fi movies focus and charm, and it’s right to point out that Blomkamp has been unfairly targeted. Especially since he’s only made three movies, and the first one is beyond wonderful.

    He might be getting a bit too comfortable though. Let him play in someone else’s sandbox for a while if he wants. There’s always been an anti-corporate bent to the Alien franchise. Maybe that will be enough to sustain his interest.

    The first two Alien films remain incredible. It pains me that the series somehow deteriorated into chaos. It’s only going to get worse. Now there are going to be two parallel Alien franchises: one overseen by Blomkamp, the other overseen by people who are stoned out of their minds. Sorry, I meant Ridley Scott and the guy who wrote Green Lantern. The sad thing is, the original script for Prometheus was good, before the studio decided it was a potential franchise.

      Exactly. Getting him to work someone else’s universe will help him expand his range a bit.

      Yeah am not too sure about the prequels running along side of the sequels. I know which one I’d be watching 😀

    I’m really liking the Aquaman poster. I’ve only seen the black and white posters before, this colored version is pretty cool. 😀

    I’m excited that there will be another Alien movie. If Chappie turns out great, then I’ll be more excited that Blomkamp is the director. 😀

    Neill Blomkamp has made 2 films. One was amazing, one was disappointing-to-meh-to-solid depending on who you ask (it was divisive, in other words). Both films were about inequality and neither were nearly as heavy-handed as Avatar, Selma, Dances with Wolves etc. which most people jizzed over when they came out.

    People need to stop giving him crap for his sociopolitical messages. At least he’s not making one CGI-heavy Star Wars-ripoff after another. At least he tries, and one of the those 2 tries was awesome. I’d say for a burgeoning sci-fi director, that’s a pretty good record so far.

    Moreover, the Aliens-sequel has long been a passion-project of his. He’s gonna do fine with it, and really, who else are you gonna give an Alien-sequel to? He’s the only sci-fi filmmaker in the world with the credentials for it.

    Christopher Nolan would just make a PG-13 blockbuster with 5th-dimensional deus ex machina’s that magically close gigantic plot holes 😛

      You are defending him with passion. I love it.

      Pretty sure you insulted a lot of other directors in your defense but still, I get it.

      You have to admit though an Alien film would not work with an equality message. And directors should do a wide variety of films.

      I like directors to have a style of directing but not the same themes, style, plot, characters, visuals and scenery. District 9, Elysium and Chappie look and feel the same.

      I think Alien will help him no end. Shake things up a bit 😀

        I’m not sure I agree with your assessment that he needs to do something different. I would say he could stand to do the same (or different) things *better* than Elysium, but that’s about all the complaints I have.

        You don’t see people complaining about Quentin Tarantino making every one of his films into a spaghetti-western with hip-hop music and samurai references. Tarantino is incredibly one-note in terms of style, but people love him because he nails that style every time.

        That being said, I can’t see how Alien will discuss social class inequality. Maybe Gender/sexual inequality (because the series has always been about that from the start with Sigourney Weaver), but that’s about it.

          Quentin Tarantino has a far more diverse style than Blomkamp. Pulp Fiction next to Django Unchained. You know its Tarantino but they are widely different films.

          I down’t mind messages but mix it up already. Three films about social divides in a row.

            I think we’re in agreement on that, he needs to be less heavy-handed, but Blomkamp’s still the only sci-fi director capable of doing the franchise justice. Cameron could certainly still do it, but he’s busy working on 3 Avatar sequels 😦 …

            Moreover, the Alien films have lots of recurring themes of inequality and sociopolitics, e.g. corporate greed, the Weyland-Yutani company, the Vietnam War, sexism, the patriarchy, not to mention that the Alien is a giant penis that kills people through penetration 😛

            I liked parts but overall I didn’t like it. Hated the “new predators”. The cast didn’t really work for me either.

          I agree, there is no problem with Blomkamp’s messaging. All great directors have their pet themes. It’s all about the execution. District 9 commented on social inequality, and contained stellar worldbuilding and a genuine sense of mystery. Elysium commented on social inequality but the worldbuilding was borderline nonsensical. Chappie is about social inequality too, but it’s set in our day and age, so there will be no worldbuilding at all, only the heavy handed message.

          You see where I’m going here.

          The jury is still out on Blomkamp. That’s the optimistic way of looking at it. I want him to succeed, because God knows we need more smart purveyors of genuine science fiction. But Chappie is going to define how he’s perceived from this point on. If it’s a hit, he’ll be a science fiction auteur with a consistent vision. If it disappoints, he’ll be a one-hit wonder in a rut. All I know is, I’m glad he’s spending some time away from his own imagination and doing an Alien film. Maybe some distance from his own ideas will give him perspective. Because when he gets around to District 10 I want him at the top of his game.

            I agree for the most part. I guess I just think we should wait and see, because even in we include Chappie, he’s still only made three (3!) feature films and he’s incredibly young (35) for a director. He’s still a baby. Besides, with D9 under your belt, you know the raw talent is there, and I think we can all agree that taking the Alien franchise is a good thing for him. Plus, one could argue that he should spend some time away from screenwriting, but directing? Hell naw…

    I had no idea he was going to play Aquaman. I figured they would go with a “blonde hair, blue eye” approach, close to the comics. This is an interesting change up, I’m actually more interested now lol.
