Deadpool (2016) Review

Deadpool was done right. Like straight from the comics done right, nicely done guys. It’s ridiculously funny throughout with a great cast and characters to compliment the Merc with a mouth. The dialogue was equal parts hilarious, filled with pop culture and filthy, just how I like it. Even the action and visuals were pretty great considering the budget; they really worked within their means and it paid off.

Plot:

DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

The story was your average origin and to be honest I am origined out, however I will let it slide this time because it was done really well. They had smaller flash backs to his origin rather than just having it running from A to Z, this allowed them to have the important bits highlighted whilst ignoring other parts that really nobody cares about. So they get he gets cancer, what his previous job was, his romance and what was done to him and who the villain is.

The characters were great but I did get a very slight sense that nobody was really acting that much, felt more like them being themselves. It does work for this film though; I mean Ryan Reynolds was born for this role. The dialogue and jokes where top notch. I can’t decide between the exchanges between his blind old roommate or his love struck taxi drivers love rival in the trunk as my favourite scenes.

The action in the film is actually really good; my fear going into this would be that it would be funny but the action and fighting choreography would suffer a lack of attention and would as a result be disappointing. I was wrong and happy about it. The music was also very well picked and positioned throughout the film; almost reminded me of the way music was used in Guardians of the Galaxy. The visuals are pretty damn good. Colossus is an FX feat of its own.

Trailer:

Spoilers!

The end credit scene is a recording from an early screener where a mother and her 2 young children went to see the film thinking it was a family friendly superhero film. She wasn’t pleased … AT ALL.

That Stan Lee cameo had me in stitches. Easily the best one they’ve done. I didn’t even think he was doing them anymore. Haha an announcer at a strip club, fantastic.

Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) reacts to Colossus’ (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) threats.

Great review! For some reason, I didn’t love this one as much as I was hoping to. It was entertaining, and I agree that Ryan Reynolds was born to play it. I don’t exactly know why I didn’t love it as much as I wanted to; I think maybe it felt too much like a standard origin story to me, even though it had a different style of humor than we’re used to in these films. I’m looking forward to the sequel, though, and hope to see them branch out more. 🙂

Great review Tim! This movie was a lot of fun. Flawed in places, but exactly the Deadpool movie I had been holding out for for years. Definitely something I will watch again 😀
