Tim’s Top Ten Films of 2014

This is my list of the Top Ten Films released in the year 2014. I have reviewed each one of them or a review is pending and consider them to be all worthy of their position. If you notice any films that you loved and that are not on the list then this could mean one of two things, either I disagree or I simply didn’t see it (there’s a lot of those). Enjoy the list and check them out if you haven’t seen them.

Most Anticipated Horror Films Of Summer 2014

This is my list of the most anticipated horror films released or to be released in the summer of 2014. This one may come a bit late because it is already June by now. However most on the list may be difficult to watch at first and so this list could still be used to advice you on what good horror films are coming out. I will warn you that I have come to hate haunted house films so don’t expect any on this list. Oh and horror films have very sporadic release dates so I will just be sticking to US release dates.

Update on the voting posts. I have finished the first two ‘The Good Points To Films I Hate’ and ‘A Comic Nerdy Opinion Post’ this is obviously done as well and the next two ‘A New Top Ten List’ and ‘Some Kind of Anime Post’ will be finished over the next two weeks.

22 Jump Street (2014) Review

It’s really funny, easily on par with the first and the cast work perfectly with each other. It’s hard to pin point why these two films just work so well but this comedy sequel works because it is so ridiculously self-aware, there near a million references to the fact that this is a sequel. The visuals in this are great; all the side characters are on top form. And the film just has so many laugh out loud moments that you need to probably see a few times to get them all. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, if you have seen the film then just read because there are no spoilers in my comedy reviews.

Schmidt: “Right in the crack”

Summer Box Office 2014

Plenty of my readers know that I love a good box office prediction, and so what’s better than to predict who will win the most tightly contested season the summer, well nothing really. 2014 has a very mixed summer filled with all kinds of films; this will mean very different numbers and makes predicting them quite difficult. Normally it’s easy to see how well a sequel will make but this summer we have 3 franchises alone that have been rebooted and in their own right having sequels. That being said below is my 10 favourites to win the summer box office, not which I think will be good or that I want to win just that they will bring in the green (or whatever colour money is in your respective countries). Think I am wrong or just want to join in? Then post your 10 favourites to win in the comments section below.

Snowpiercer (2014) Review

This is a very unique film and reviewing it is going to be quite hard. It’s a South Korean film with a mostly American and British cast, I was expecting there to be more Korean actors but it is limited to two who were in my opinion very strong. The acting is brilliant and especially from Chris Evans, not something I expected from the trailers and the subtle moments of dialogue really stand out in this film. The story and setting of this film is very weird and that’s how I like these films, good Sci-Fi idea with plenty of material such as Segregation and dystopian survival. The battles and action was pretty good and again totally bizarre as it all has to take place in cramped train carts. The visuals where decent, I’d say somewhere between a B movie and Blockbuster film. And the music wasn’t bad either. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

“Have you ever been alone on this train? When was the last time you were alone? You can’t remember, can you? So please do. Take your time.” Hard to find a quote that works without seeing the film. But you’ll get it soon.

The LEGO Movie (2014) Review

This has taken far too long to review but here we are. I really liked this film and when I first heard of it I didn’t care, love a pleasant surprise. Its action packed, funny, got a great voice cast, and the story is quite touching, very much to my surprise. The visuals in this are great, I really thought the mix of Stop-motion and CGI was very impressive; I was often unable to see the difference in the film. The characters are either really funny or are great character parodies. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

300: Rise of an Empire (2014) Review

Most people who know me and have read my reviews would guess I liked 300 quite a bit and you would be right, so obviously I was going to see Rise of an Empire. Sadly and not unexpectedly this was a weaker contender than its star studded predecessor but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. The acting was passable if only dragged along by its two leads, seriously cannot remember anyone past Sullivan Stapleton and Eva Green who were both pretty good. The story and general script was pretty bad and somehow seemed smaller in scale than 300, which seems impossible considering how much more happened in this film. The battles and action was pretty great and as where the visuals short of some effects I would not have used in this film. The visuals where strong and the music wasn’t bad either. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.

Justice League: War (2014) Review

Didn’t think a DC animated film would be the first film of 2014 I would review but here we are. I got to admit this film is pretty great. Its action packed, funny, got a great voice cast, the story whilst simple works pretty well to assemble a Justice League and it’s filled with pretty good pop culture references. The visuals in this are great, with fights, powers and character designs all looking pretty cool. The characters are done brilliantly from Batman to Wonder Woman, the voicing and characters development is small if any but the establishment of who these characters where was done really well, you just get them. The film is out for VOD so I recommend checking it out.

Batman: “You bruise but you don’t kill do you…Clark?”

Superman: “You’ve made your point. Ha Bruce Wayne.”

Green Lantern: “Who the hell is Bruce Wayne?”

10 Most Anticipated Films of 2014

This is my list of the most anticipated films released in the year 2014, wow this year, crept up quick. I have a skewed view towards the genres of Sci-fi and Action, so don’t expect indie or drama, I will watch them but at the moment I just don’t care. If you notice any films that you want to see more than anything then this could mean one of two things, either I disagree or I simply forgot it was coming out. If so I would love to know if I am missing any. Also there will be a box office prediction for each film; you guys know how much I like predictions. Upcoming reviews are all 2013 film, first Frozen then The Kings of Summer and You’re Next is ironically next.
