I loved what Wright did in the first two films. Shaun of the Dead was a brilliant riff on zombie films and Hot Fuzz was the same with buddy cop films, and all I wanted was the same treatment for an alien invasion. Sadly though I think they missed the mark massively and I found this film very disappointing, sadly Wright’s worst film to date. The film as a comedy was weak and barely had any laughs in comparison to their previous work. The story was equally weak and had near to no coherency; rapidly shooting from boring slap stick fights to heart felt back stories and breakdowns. I have a lot more complaints but when it comes down to it the films a comedy that isn’t funny. I had no real anticipation going into this film, the trailer was alright and whilst the reviews where mostly good I still didn’t feel it was for me. I couldn’t have been more wrong, this film was truly hysterical and I am not sure if it was the lack of good comedy films this year or that my expectations were particularly low but I loved. I couldn’t believe how funny this film was and how much I laughed. The cast were great, the visuals weren’t bad, the dialogue and humour is right on the money, and even the story moved along really well. I would recommend this film to anyone who liked Pineapple Express and Superbad. Jay Baruchel: The power of Christ compels you!
Jonah Hill: Is the power of Christ compelling me Jay? Guess what? It’s not that compelling.
Not what I was expecting at all. The first of big science fiction films coming out this spring and it was surprising treat both in its original story and breath taking visuals. If you have seen the trailer and made your mind up think again because it really goes in different directions and I hope everyone goes out to give it a go. The acting was very good, the characters were good and the dialogue was good. It may not be for everyone but I struggle to find any complaints and have plenty to compliment as you will find as you read on. I would recommend the IMAX as it’s a great film with eye popping visuals. There will be a spoiler section but other than that this is spoiler free so no need to worry. This film is a bit of a weird one, as it is supposed to be a comedy but ends up being mainly a drama. So in that respect it’s a hard one to review, so I will class this as a drama with a romance twist. But as for the comedy, it’s not funny and don’t expect much Steve Carell magic. The relationship between Penny and Dodge though is quite nice so it’s not a total right off.
