Chappie (2015) Mini Review
I was extremely critical of Blomkampf after Elysium, and no less so in preparation for this film. However I actually really liked it. He has redeemed himself in part to me anyway. Chappie has a message or two that really work. It’s not about the danger of AI, it’s about how dangerous humanity can be when faced with change. Or how innocence can be corrupted? Its got like five messages floating round. Just pick one and go with it.
I’ll go into more detail below but give it a try, got trailers and images below. Check it all out and give me a like and a comment at the end.
Movie News Report: He Lived Long and Prospered
Encase anyone was wondering I am still doing reviews but haven’t seen any new films recently and the new trailers have been poo. I will be watching and reviewing Chappie next week.
This is an end of the week wrap up of what has happened in the geeky world of movies. I took better notes this time so I have a more complete list of things that have happened. Sadly nothing of much note has happened in the world of movies. So this post is a bit more random. And of course the devastating news that Leonard Nimoy has passed away.
Also I’ll include some movie features I liked from the blogosphere. I follow a lot of nerds!
Chappie (Trailer #2) Review
FIRST TRAILER REVIEW OF 2015! I wasn’t really into the first trailer because it seemed to show pretty generic stuff for a first trailer and am a bit sore from Elysium (So disappointing) so I didn’t review it. Also no time. This I liked though, the idea of AI is fascinating and it’s always a good sci fi concept. The idea of replacing police with robots is giving me very vivid RoboCop flash backs. But I’ll wait and see. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer, more so if you disagree.
“I am consciousness. I am alive. I am Chappie”
Interstellar (2014) Review
I really liked this film, probably my favourite science fiction film in years. The concept was dark but surprisingly humanist from a director like Nolan. The visuals are great, the split between practical effects and CGI are really well done, and IMAX is a must. Then we have the cast, who are great performers, have some excellent dialogue and emotional scenes, but I am not sure about the chemistry. I was worried about this film beforehand and even thought this might be Nolan’s first flop, boy am glad I was wrong.
I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.
“Our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, because our destiny lies above us.”
Interstellar (Final Trailer) Review
I haven’t reviewed any trailers for this film because they don’t really show anything to talk about, and they all looked pretty much the same, McConaughey crying, corn fields and Christopher Nolan’s name in massive bold letters. But this trailer looks pretty cool, got plenty to look at without spoiling anything. The visuals and style of the film looks like it is Nolan in space which is what we all wanted from the film, acting looks solid, and we should be seeing plenty of SCI-FI shenanigans. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer, more so if you disagree.
“Well we got this far. Farther than any human in history”
“Not far enough!”
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) Review
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the most comic book a superhero film has ever been and for a superhero like Spider-Man that is really impressive. Special kudos to Mark Webb and Andrew Garfield for ripping this character straight off the page. Now don’t get me wrong I loved the film but not everyone will, if your first experience with spider man was the last film series and not the comics then parts will be jarring but spider-man fans will love the lighter, funnier and quipier spider-man than they have been given in the past. The story is more focused in the sequel as it tries to answer old questions and raises new ones going forward into the franchise. The visuals are great and even though I was a little scared at some of the CGI in the trailers believe me the final product is spectacular. Mark Webb has clearly become comfortable with his new spider-man world and I cannot wait to see what he does next. SINISTER SIX! I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.
“Soon everyone in this city will know how it is to live in my world. A world without power, without mercy, a world without Spider-Man. They will see me for who I truly am. I’m Electro.”
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Trailer #1) Review
Wow was not expecting that, at all. It’s looking very interesting and whilst I have no idea what the final product will deliver I am very interested in this film. Watched the trailer a few times now and my only thought is wow Sony is REALLY going for it! Insane amount of content in this film and there is a lot of stuff I like, and the usual worries I get. We see Rhino, Electro, Green Goblin or Hob Goblin? And easily my favourite scene showing the super tech for the sinister six. Sinister Six! And this is only the trailer for the second film. So yeah I like what I see so far and whether Sony’s strategy of going big or going home works out at least it’s a really big change in the normal formula of superhero films. Come on Webb show us something new. Spiderman, Spiderman does whatever a spider can. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer, more so if you disagree.
“Soon everyone in this city will know how it feels to live in a world without power, without mercy. A world without Spider-Man!”
Man of Steel (2013) Review
Man of Steel has a Zack Snyder look and feel with a Goyer/Nolan story, and if that is something that appeals to you then Man of Steel is your film. Somehow the team behind this film have made superman both more down to earth than any superman film before whilst also making him far more powerful and raw as a superhero. The visuals are just unbelievable and I’ll devote a paragraph to discussing that, the acting is good and General Zod is just wow. I have heard complaints that the film couldn’t decide between a science fiction film and a superhero film but to be honest that’s idiotic, the two blend perfectly and they did it in such a realistic way I am surprised it hasn’t been done before. I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.
“My name is General Zod. I have journeyed across an ocean of stars to reach you. Your world has sheltered one of my citizens. He will look like you, but he is not one of you. To those of you who know his location, the fate of your planet rests in your hands. To Kal-El, I say this: Surrender within 24 hours, or watch this world suffer the consequences.”
Man of Steel (Trailer #4) Review
This final trailer gives the doubters nowhere to run. How anyone doesn’t want to watch this film now is just beyond me and this glorious trailer gives me goosebumps. It is AMAZING!!! I will be watching this film in IMAX, it will be great and it will blow my mind! On my previous review of trailer #3 I confessed my ridiculous excitement for this film, and clearly this trailer doesn’t help, I am losing it right now! The trailer started a little freaky like a found footage horror but then Zod’s voice commands your attention and you will listen! We also get what I am assuming is Zod’s theme music which I like, villains need themes and this one is badass! Oh yeah and everything else! Fighting, heat vision, Faora, then more FIGHTING!!! 14th June save the date!
Man of Steel (Trailer #3) Review
First thoughts after watching this trailer was that the 14th June is far too long a wait. Anyway this trailer didn’t waste any time, opening with a battle on Krypton, which couldn’t have looked cooler unless I saw it on an IMAX screen. On my previous review of trailer #2 I totally called Hans Zimmer’s score to be used on the 3rd trailer and it was and it’s brilliant! It’s got Zimmer’s usual sound but a bit more upbeat to match with what the films theme of superman seems to be. The scene as he takes off just gives me goose bumps. Notice how I haven’t talked much about the EPIC stuff going on in this trailer? That’s because I’ll be talking about them all in the top scenes section, which may have a few blurry images due to breakneck speed of the action. Now the wait begins to see the Man of Steel kick all kinds of ass. Oh God it looks so good! I expect comments of praise from all of you.
