Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) Review
Guardians of the Galaxy might be my favourite film of the year, seen it three times. Marvel has had a brilliant year with creating new genres within the comic book genre. Easily the funniest superhero film ever made but not in a really cheesy way like Thor 2, it was genuinely funny, it was a James Gunn film through and through. The visuals are great, the split between practical effects and CGI are really well done, and the sheer amount of aliens created visually in the film brings you back to star wars. Then we have the cast who are a perfect group for this action adventure film in space, you get them, you’re with them. Well done James knew you could do it.
I’ll go into much more detail below but for now bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film then check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.
Rocket: “His people are entirely literal. Metaphors go right over his head.”
Drax: “Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are excellent and I would catch it.”
Guardians of the Galaxy (Trailer #1) Review
Well that’s certainly something, not sure what exactly but yeah. Overall I am liking the look and feel of the characters and this world they’ve built, seems like a well-established set of worlds. I do have a problem with the structure of this trailer, the first half is a minute and a bit of character establishment which I get but really meant the content was just a teaser trailer, slightly disappointed on that front, hoping for more story structure in the next trailer. Another opinion is that past the people who are already on board for this film (me and the nerd minority) I don’t see many people being won over by this trailer; think they needed a stronger sell. I do however love that music at the end. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer, more so if you disagree.
“Oh am sorry. I, I didn’t know how this machine worked” You’ll get it.
Machete Kills (Red Band Trailer #2) Review
Now that’s more like it. I didn’t like the first one because it was a bit dull and boring. But with this you get action, laughs, terrible CGI and lots of sexy ladies. I think with a film like this you need a good red band because otherwise you are restraining 90% of the film from the trailer. This reminds me a lot more of the grindhouse trailer for the first one, even the voice over guy. Enjoy the review and please tell me your initial reactions to this new trailer.
Machete Kills (Trailer #1) Review
What was that?! Explosive nothing is all I can really describe it as, weak trailer. What happened to the hysterical Grindhouse trailer that made the first one so famous? (Here) Don’t know where to begin so I’ll just pick a complaint at random. There are too many guest stars, the characters are going to be watered down to make room for them all and it will not work, also half of them can’t act and aren’t even actors. Next up we have a narrator with such a strong Mexican accent I thought he was speaking Spanish until I recognized an English word and couldn’t believe it, especially in an international trailer because am pretty good with accents and this threw me way off. Lastly this trailer was basically a flash card presentation to show all its stars and its lost most of the…not charm but rough and cheap feel from the 80’s to the films production. It looks like it has been crushed by its own success.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) Review
Star Trek Into Darkness has really up’d the game this summer. It’s going to take something truly epic to take Into Darkness off the top spot in my opinion, looking at you Man of Steel. The story is very good and benefits from the always brilliant plot driver revenge, someone’s really not happy. The acting was great had the same brilliant performances from the first film with the added bonus of Benedict Cumberbatch being full on badass! We also get some great dialogue going in this film, decided to not put a spoiler one in the first paragraph but it’s a great line anyway. Unlike Iron Man 3 you will quote this films villain. Science fiction wise this film gave logic a slight beating but nothing that would make stop and think what? The visuals are just spectacular and it’s the first film this year that I saw any reason to put a pair of 3D glasses on, also recommending full IMAX for this one. Bookmark this if you are waiting to see the film, leave any comments below, if you have seen the film check out the spoiler sections and I will look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts.
“Let me explain to you what’s going on here. You are a criminal! I watched you murder innocent men and women. I was authorized to end you! And the only reason you are still alive is because I am allowing it! So shut your mouth!”
Star Trek (2009) Review
With the release of Star Trek Into Darkness this weekend I thought it would be a great time to review part 1 in the nerdiest reboot of all time. This Star Trek was a shockingly good film when it came out and I was very impressed when I first saw, so angry I didn’t get to see in IMAX but either watching it on a phone or the big screen this film was excellent. The story was clever and allowed for both an origin story of the original and a whole new path for the franchise, Abram’s you sneaky Bastard. The cast is great and I loved their interpretations of the characters, some interesting choices for the roles but they paid off with some great performances. The visuals are amazing and are truly breath-taking, from the halls of the Enterprise to the epic battles in space. The science fiction is fascinating but for the new generation a little heart pounding action is required and that’s what this film does well in many different ways. I hope you all enjoy the new Star Trek this weekend and come back for my review on Friday. Live long and prosper \\//.
“You know your father was Captain of a Starship for 12 minutes. He saved 800 lives, including your mother’s… and yours. I dare you to do better.”
