Box Office Predictions (14-16th June)

Second week of predictions isn’t going to be any easier with two wide releases which to say the least are wild cards. To be honest I like them that way because it’s more fun with making the predictions. I don’t see any returning films making a challenge to the new comers but you never know. One way or another this weekend should be fun to watch both in the cinema and on the figures. MAN OF STEEL!!! Go Watch it now!

Returning Films

Last weekend we saw an incredible opening weekend for The Purge earning itself a total of $34M, but I don’t see it making anywhere near that again with average to bad reviews and generally horrors drop off at a faster rate than the average film in second week takings, so am predicting $14M. Am sure Fast and Furious 6 will make a return to the top five but it can’t be making the same numbers for another week so I am going for $9M this weekend. Now you see me is maintaining its numbers quite well so I think it might do $10M. I think the new films will suck up all the money this weekend though I may be fatally wrong.

New Films

Man of Steel

Plot:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

Analysis:

Warner Bros. are predicting conservative numbers for their tent pole film this summer with weekend numbers around $75M. It’s always good for studios to predict low so their films don’t look like epic failures on opening weekends, however anything lower than $75M would be devastating for them with the sheer amount of advertising and buzz, never mind the big budget. My problem comes with guessing the actual total with a mix of issues, one Zack Snyder is a 50/50 director when it comes to making money, two the last time a superman came out it was at the same time of year and made $53M on its opening weekend and three it’s a reboot and not connected to a franchise of films. But on the good side of things, one superman is a good brand, two the advertising has been amazing literally everywhere and three having Nolan on board will bring in both the Dark Knight fans and Nolan fans (me) with at least half of them curious to see Nolan’s influence on Superman story. My prediction is $120M. I want it to make $150M. Make it so my followers.

This is the End

Plot:

The comedy This Is The End follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.

Analysis:

It may be coming out to a weekend of strong competition but it is a very different genre and will be interesting to see how it does. The reviews coming out are surprisingly good and with a massive cast of popular young comedians it should do respectable numbers even with Man of Steel. Can’t forget it’s been months since a good comedy film has come out and when a comedy film gets good reviews first of all shocks the world and secondly can bring in big money. My prediction $35M.
